It's the marathon of hatha yoga: the magic number of 108 rounds - and for us LYM (Living Yoga Method) practioners, that's 24 asanas (postures) per round.

Sunrise is at 05:22am in Gramais, Tyrol,

05:25am in Dornbirn, Vorarlberg, (both Vienna time),

and 04:44am GMT London time.

We'll meet at 05:00am CET, or 06:00am GMT to ensure we're all bowing to the sun together as he rises on the shortest day of the year.

Offered as a virtual online gathering, in addition to an open live event for a few brave souls who wish to join me in person. A Zoom Link will be sent to all participants via email before the event.

This isn't a guided session, however will be opened with a short ceremony by Hannah and then we can all support one another in our own endeavours. You'll need your own efficient counting method (don't think you can do it in your head, it's highly unlikely!) - I now use a hand clicker and a notepad - and to be self responsible enough to take things at your own pace (listen to your body).

The ancient yogis taught that each of us replicates the world at large, embodying "rivers, seas, mountains, fields...stars and planets...the sun and moon" (Shiva Samhita, II.1-3). The outer sun, they asserted, is in reality a token of our own "inner sun," which corresponds to our subtle, or spiritual, heart. Here is the seat of consciousness and higher wisdom (jnana) and, in some traditions, the domicile of the embodied self (jivatman).

Practicing Surya Namaskara is one of the most ancient ways to cultivate our own internal power source, connecting with our inner Sun, and powering up our energy centre at Manipura chakra, as we warm-up the entire physical body and link the mind and breath to our being.

Why the number 108???

The Planets: The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. The distance from the Sun to the Earth is 108 times the diameter of  the Sun. The average distance of the Moon from the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Moon.

Ayurveda: there are 108 ‘Marma’ points that are vital for giving life to living beings. These are similar to acupuncture points. In ancient Vedic times, marma points were called bindu – a dot, secret dot or mystic point. Like a door or pathway, activating a marma point opens into the inner pharmacy of the body.

Yantras: The powerful Sri Yantra intersects in 54 points each with a masculine and feminine quality, totalling 108.

Vedic astrology: there are 12 houses and 9 planets. 12 times 9 = 108.

Tantra: it is estimated that each day we breathe 21,600 times, out of which 10,800 are solar energy and 10, 800 are lunar energy. Multiplying 108 X 100 is 10,800.

Sanskrit language: There are 54 letters in Sanskrit, each can be mentioned as masculine (Shiva) and feminine (Shakti) aspect, totalling 108.

Japa: Japa is the silent repetition of mantras whilst holding and turning the 108 individual mala beads. The Guru bead is a larger bead, not counted as part of the 108. It is the guiding bead, the one that marks the beginning and end of the mala. Traditionally this bead is never crossed. On completion of one round of your mala, you change direction for the next round. A catholic rosary has 54 beads.

Numerology: 9 times 12: Both these numbers have been said to have spiritual significance in many traditions. 9 x 12 = 108. Also, 1 + 8 = 9.
1, 0, and 8: Some say that 1 stands for God or higher Truth, 0 stands for emptiness or completeness in spiritual practice, and 8 stands for infinity or eternity.

From mathematics: Powers of 1, 2, and 3 in maths: 1 to 1st power=1; 2 to 2nd power=4 (2×2); 3 to 3rd power=27 (3x3x3). 1x4x27=108 108 is a Harshad number, which is an integer divisible by the sum of its digits (Harshad is from Sanskrit, and means “great joy”)

Chakras: The chakras are the energy centres of the body and intersections of nadis or energy channels. We have 7 major chakras along the spine and there are said to be a total of 108 nadis or converging to form the heart chakra.

Chemistry: In astrology, the metal silver is said to represent the moon. The atomic weight of silver is 108.

Classic Vedic literature: There are 108 Puranas and 108 Upanishads (not that all of them are published together in translations).

Indian folklore: There are said to be 108 earthly desires in mortals. There are said to be 108 lies that humans tell. There are said to be 108 human delusions or forms of ignorance. Some say there are 108 feelings, with 36 related to the past, 36 related to the present, and 36 related to the future.

Indian dance: The famous saint Bharata wrote “The Natya Shastra” which has 108 karanas (hand and feet movements) in total. This is the source of classical Indian dance.

Nature in India: The sacred River Ganges (Ganga Ma) spans a longitude of 12 degrees (79 to 91), and latitude of 9 degrees (22 to 31). 12 x 9 = 108.
